OK,
Just in from the projection room (my den). Four rolls of Kodachrome fresh from Dwayne's. There was the tiniest bit of water spotting at the very beginning and very end of reel 3, little enough either to ignore or trim out when I edit. Without the controversy these last few days I might not have even noticed it. Everything else was basically perfect.
This is the miracle film!
1) I was afraid it would jitter because it's roughly 1-2 year old Kodachrome.
2) I was afraid it would get wiped out by airport x-rays.
3)I haven't used the camera very much. (I went to the Minolta XL-401 I usually use for titling and animation work because it is small and lightweight, after this I'm going to let it out more often!)
4)3 days after I sent it to Dwayne's I started to hear there were quality problems there.
Despite all this, it came out great!
The only issue is that since this was shot during our vacation in Europe, it's going to take a lot of very creative editing and titling to keep it from being just a typical "home movie"
PS It came back quickly, and carefully packed.

I am very glad your rolls came out ok....since you shot it in Europe, you obviously can't easily go back for retakes! What is that water spotting anyway? What causes it? Can it be cleaned off with film cleaner? Since you were in Europe, you could have stopped off at the Kodak Switzerland plant for processing "while you wait!" (ha ha!). I want to continue to use Dwayne's, but I'm going to shoot a fun little music video on film in the next month or so, and I don't want to put in 3 or 4 days of hard work, only to have the film ruined...guess I'll have to get more trusting! Thanks Mike!
One odd thing, has anybody noticed that your autothread projector doesn't like the red leader Dwayne's uses? I have a Kodak Moviedeck which didn't want to grab this leader, It's almost like it was thicker than normal. BTW, another film I showed after the Dwayne's rolls functioned exactly as normal.
Alex? Would it be a bad thing if we had a running forum of the results people are having with the different labs? Something like "I sent four rolls of Plus-X to Bob's Cinema Emporium and Taxidermy Shop, and it came back with scratches and dirt" This way we could have a feel for what's going on out there. (People should tell what's satisfactory too.)

The red leader does seem a bit thicker..my Bolex sp8 special doesnt seem to have a problem with it. I think a running forum or thread about lab processing results would be great! Might keep the labs on their toes too!

I have a roll of k40 that i shot about a month ago..it's one of the 10 year old rolls that I found...didn't develop it because i think i over exposed it...but i guess for 4.88, i could take it Walmart, and see how it comes out...even if it is overexposed, would be a great test of the processing facilities!! mike

I knew there was a reason we had not heard back from Dwaynes, our resident chemist is on maternity leave!
The other person I could e-mail is out this week.
But no fear, there is a conscientious substitute who I have e-mailed. Hopefully we will hear back in a day or two.
